Network Administration

This course is designed to equip learners with strong practical and technical skills in designing, installing, configuring, and maintaining computer networks, which are essential for reliable connectivity in homes, schools, businesses, and institutions in today’s digital world. It focuses on hands-on training in both fundamental and advanced networking concepts, including IP addressing, routing, switching, wireless networking, and network security. A key component is MikroTik technology, widely used in Uganda and across Africa, where learners gain practical experience in configuring routers, managing bandwidth, and controlling internet distribution in real-world environments such as offices, schools, and cyber cafΓ©s. The course also develops troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve network issues while optimizing performance and ensuring stable connectivity. By the end of the program, learners will be able to design and manage small to medium-sized networks and work effectively as networking or ICT support professionals.

Network Administration
  • This course provides learners with practical and technical skills in designing, implementing, configuring, and maintaining modern computer networks. It combines networking theory with hands-on MikroTik training to prepare learners for real-world ICT environments in homes, schools, businesses, and service providers.

    πŸ“‘ Networking Fundamentals

Learners are introduced to the core concepts that form the foundation of computer networking. This includes understanding how networks operate and communicate in different environments. Types of networks (LAN, WAN, MAN) and their real-world applications, network topologies such as star, bus, ring, and hybrid structures, OSI and TCP/IP models and how data moves across networks.

    🌍 IP Addressing

This module focuses on how devices are identified and connected within a network. IPv4 addressing structure and formats, subnetting techniques for efficient IP allocation, basic network planning and IP distribution strategies.

    πŸ”€ Router & Switch Configuration

Learners gain practical skills in configuring essential networking devices used in organizations and ISPs. Basic router and switch configuration, introduction to routing protocols and how data is directed, VLAN configuration for network segmentation and management.

    πŸ“Ά MikroTik Training

This is a core practical component of the course focusing on widely used MikroTik systems. RouterOS installation and setup, bandwidth management and traffic control, firewall configuration for network security, hotspot setup for user authentication and internet access control.

    πŸ“‘ Wireless Networking

This section covers wireless network installation and optimization for stable connectivity. Wi-Fi setup and security configuration, signal strength optimization and coverage improvement, wireless network planning for homes and organizations.

    πŸ› οΈ Troubleshooting

Learners are trained to identify and solve common network problems efficiently. Diagnosing network connectivity issues, using networking tools and diagnostic techniques, troubleshooting hardware and configuration errors.

  • To successfully enroll in the Computer Networking & MikroTik course, learners should have basic foundational skills and a strong interest in networking technologies.

    • Basic computer knowledge:
Learners should be comfortable using a computer, including operating a keyboard and mouse, navigating folders, opening applications, and performing basic file management tasks. These skills are important for handling network tools, configurations, and practical exercises during training.

    • Understanding of internet usage:
Learners should have a basic understanding of how the internet works in everyday life, including browsing websites, using online applications, and connecting devices to a network. This helps in understanding how data moves across networks and how connectivity is managed.

    • Interest in technical networking systems:
Learners should have a genuine interest in how computer networks operate, including routers, switches, Wi-Fi systems, and internet service delivery. A curiosity for solving technical problems and managing systems will help learners succeed in this practical course.
  • To support practical training and real-world networking skills development, the following tools, equipment, and materials will be used throughout the course:

    πŸ–§ Networking Lab Equipment

Learners will use physical networking devices such as routers, switches, cables, and access points in a controlled lab environment. This hands-on setup allows students to understand how real network infrastructures are installed, connected, and maintained.

    πŸ“‘ MikroTik Routers and Software

The course heavily utilizes MikroTik hardware and RouterOS software, which are widely used in professional network environments. Learners will gain practical experience in configuration, bandwidth management, firewall setup, and hotspot management using MikroTik systems.

    πŸ§ͺ Simulation Tools

Networking simulation software will be used to allow learners to practice configurations in a virtual environment. These tools help students test network designs, troubleshoot errors, and build confidence before working on physical devices.

    πŸ“˜ Lab Manuals and Exercises

Structured lab guides and step-by-step exercises will be provided to support learning. These materials ensure learners can follow practical sessions effectively, complete assignments, and reinforce theoretical concepts through real-world application.

  • Duration: 8–16 weeks
The course runs for approximately two to four months, allowing learners to gain both foundational knowledge and practical networking skills through structured hands-on training.
  • Level: Beginner to Intermediate
This program is designed for beginners as well as learners with basic ICT knowledge, gradually progressing to intermediate-level networking and MikroTik configuration skills.
  • Mode of Study: Practical hands-on
Training is delivered through intensive practical sessions where learners work directly with networking equipment, simulations, and real-world configurations.
  • Certification: Yes
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a recognized certificate confirming their competence in computer networking and MikroTik systems.
  • Career Opportunities:
This course prepares learners for technical and support roles in the ICT industry, including:
    • Network Technician
    • ISP Support Engineer
    • IT Support Specialist
